Community & Youth Organizing Series 2022
The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) Youth Studies program is hosting a three-part lecture series on youth and community organizing throughout January 2022. Led by instructor Lumumba Akinwole-Bandele, organizer with the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement and an adjunct lecturer at CUNY SPS, this series gives attendees the opportunity to explore timely issues around activism while engaging with the organizers, scholars, and activists doing the work in today's ever-changing environment.
Addressing Vicarious Trauma
Counselors, educators, youth service providers, organizers, and others responsible for managing and helping others navigate these dangerous and unprecedented times are not exempt from the stress, concern, and related effects of these times. In fact, many in these positions experience vicarious trauma. Join us for an in-depth discussion on vicarious trauma. In conversation with psychotherapist, DeShannon Bowens, we will explore individual and institutional approaches to addressing vicarious trauma.

Join us as we discuss sources of violence, conflict, and “crime” and explore institutional and individual practices of community safety.

No One is Illegal
Images of Black and Brown people at the southern borders of the US have been used to illustrate many harmful narratives and policies that further criminalize communities of color. Visuals of border patrol and ICE agents violently attacking and detaining immigrants have sparked new conversations on the impact of these narratives. Many of these immigrants become vulnerable members of our communities here in NYC. Join us as we examine migration, destabilization of nations in the Global south, local and national policies that discriminate against undocumented immigrants and the local work to organize and protect young immigrants of color.
