Join us for an engaging session on supporting neurodiverse students in the college setting, where we'll explore the common challenges they face and share strategies for faculty and staff. Research shows that inclusive learning environments improve self-esteem in neurodiverse students. The issues that will be discussed in the session involve the difficulties of participation and building social connections in the classroom. Neurodiverse individuals often experience anxiety in class participation, communicating with professors about assignments, and collaborating with classmates on academic tasks. We will discuss the importance of universal design for learning and showcase practical interventions that professors/instructors can use to help neurodiverse students participate in class and build connections with fellow students. Drawing insight from the Neurodiversity Program at LaGuardia Community College and conversations with neurodiverse students, we will be showcasing successful practices and offer practical solutions for creating a welcoming, accessible classroom. Faculty and staff will leave equipped with the tools to foster an environment that enhances student confidence, academic success, and a sense of community.
