Disability culture is an important concept to be aware of. Disability culture involves individuals with various disabilities and backgrounds. These individuals come from different walks of life. It is important to be aware of their backgrounds and preferences in terms of language use and identity. Some individuals with disabilities were born with disabilities, while others developed disabilities later on in life. This fact impacts their needs and levels of support as well as their language preferences. It is important to provide best practices for culturally competent accessibility and inclusion support. This includes in a classroom setting and beyond. During this session, I want to ensure that the participants understand the differences between accessibility, equity, and inclusion and how that applies to their work in supporting individuals with disabilities. Some instances include how to be mindful when providing accommodations and types of support that meet the needs of the individuals. It is important to note that not all persons with disabilities have the same accessibility needs. Also, I will touch on how to provide accessibility in information sharing through various platforms such as PowerPoints for DeafBlind individuals. Concepts and strategies regarding best practices for communicating with DeafBlind individuals will be discussed.
