Addison Turner
Worcester Youth Cooperatives (WYC) and Sankofa Cooperatives
Addison Turner is Black, Muslim organizer born, raised, and based in Worcester, Massachusetts. In 2020, Addison supported six high-school seniors to envision and launch Worcester Youth Cooperatives (WYC). WYC is a co-op incubator space initially created by youth to address social problems they witnessed being exacerbated by the local impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. After initiating their first three cooperative projects (a hydroponic farm, a bicycle-based delivery service, and a harm reduction/homeless outreach collective) WYC members developed a year-round program for youth-powered cooperative development including an intensive "Cooperative Solutions Academy" training series. WYC's vision for the future is not only to advance revolutionary survival through cooperative economics locally, but to build partnerships and alliances with folks doing similar work around the country and even internationally. After supporting their launch, Addison continues to be a non-voting "adult-ally member" of WYC. He is also a founding member of Sankofa Cooperatives, a grassroots initiative for Black self-determination in Bridgeport, CT, and he is an active harm reduction worker for the survival and self-determination of homeless folks and drug users in Massachusetts communities.
