Jesica R. Bates (she/they) is a doctoral candidate in Communication Sciences and Disorders and an M.A. student in Anthropology at Louisiana State University. Their research examines how institutions determine what counts as communication, knowledge, and expertise, with a focus on autistic communication, participatory research, and multimodal expression. They founded the participatory research initiative CARES (Community-led Autism Research, Engagement, & Service)
