Name
Beyond the Classroom: Community-Based Solutions for a Neurodiversity-Affirming Transition to Adulthood
Description

The transition from high school to post-secondary life can be especially challenging for neurodivergent young adults, as traditional models often overlook key areas of support. While academic accommodations are important, they don't address the full range of needs, such as executive functioning, sensory processing, mental health, and social integration. Many transition plans fail to take a holistic approach, leaving significant gaps in care. This session will explore community-based, neurodiversity-affirming transition models that go beyond academics. We'll focus on building strong high school-to-college transition networks that connect schools, employers, community organizations, and neurodivergent individuals themselves. These networks prioritize life skills, career readiness, and mental health, centering autonomy and dignity throughout the process. We will also address the unique needs of often-overlooked populations within the neurodivergent community, including nonspeaking individuals, those with intellectual disabilities, and those from marginalized backgrounds. By amplifying their voices, we aim to create truly inclusive transition frameworks. Through real-world examples, neurodiversity-informed strategies, and practical tools, attendees will learn how to develop sustainable, collaborative, and person-centered support systems. This session offers concrete strategies to help ensure all neurodivergent young adults experience a more affirming and successful transition into adulthood.
