Name
Intro to LGBTQIA+ Allyship
Description

Studies show that transgender and non-binary people are three to six times more likely to be autistic. In addition, 28% of Gen Z adults identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Recognizing and supporting individuals with diverse gender identities and sexual orientations is key to strengthening neurodiverse communities in college and beyond. This session, Introduction to LGBTQIA+ Allyship, will provide participants with foundational knowledge and practical strategies to become effective allies to LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly within neurodiverse spaces. Participants will begin by defining key terms related to gender identity, gender expression, assigned sex, sexual orientation, and more, gaining a clearer understanding of the spectrum of identities that exist beyond binary frameworks. The session will emphasize the importance of inclusive language, guiding participants in adopting gender-neutral terms and using pronouns respectfully. Attendees will explore why sharing pronouns is a vital practice in creating affirming environments and will identify places where they can share their pronouns to signal support and inclusivity. This session will equip participants with concrete strategies for being active allies to the LGBTQIA+ community, with a focus on practical applications in educational and professional settings. We will also address common microaggressions that LGBTQIA+ individuals frequently encounter and discuss ways to recognize and mitigate them to foster more affirming spaces. Through interactive discussions, real-world examples, and self-reflective exercises, attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of LGBTQIA+ allyship and actionable steps to help build more inclusive, supportive communities for all individuals, especially those navigating the intersection of LGBTQIA+ identities and neurodiversity.
