NATIONAL ANTHEM PERFORMER
Audition to Perform the National Anthem

All students at the CUNY School of Professional Studies are invited to apply to perform the National Anthem for the upcoming 2027 CUNY SPS Commencement ceremony.
This is a unique opportunity to play an active role in the ceremony celebrating the Class of 2027.
Applications must include a short answer (100-150 words) about your experience as a vocalist, as well as a video audition of yourself singing the National Anthem. So that we can fairly review all submitted videos, your recording must be done in one continuous take, without additional vocal filters or effects. Instrumental accompaniment is permitted.
The National Anthem performer selection process consists of several milestones, outlined in the next tabs. Please be sure to read through the timeline before submitting your audition.
To apply, you must be a current CUNY SPS student, or a member of the graduating class of 2027.
You must also commit to attending the ceremony in person in Spring 2027.
- Response to short answer questions about your experience as a vocalist.
- Video audition of you singing the United States National Anthem.
- The performance must be one continuous take.
- Vocal effects or filters are not permitted.
- Instrumental accompaniment is permitted.
The selection committee for the student vocalist consists of members of the School’s administration. The committee will review all submitted applications and supporting materials carefully to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements starting March 16th*.
After deliberation, the committee will select the student who they feel delivered the best audition to perform at the Spring 2027 ceremony. All applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision, whether selected or not, via email by March 31st*.

Preparation: During this time, the Performer will work with a professional vocal coach (2-3 sessions) provided by the School. Sessions will be arranged at a mutually convenient time. |

If You are Selected to Perform the National Anthem
Being selected as the Commencement Vocalist is an exciting opportunity to share your talent and help create a memorable moment for the graduating class. If selected, you can expect the following:
Performance Preparation
You will work with members of the CUNY SPS team to make arrangements and prepare for your Commencement performance. The School will work with you on performance logistics, including rehearsal and other details to help ensure you are prepared for the ceremony.
Professional Vocal Coaching
To support your preparation, you will receive up to three sessions with a professional vocal coach. These sessions are designed to help you:
- Refine your vocal performance
- Strengthen your delivery and technique
- Practice performing your selected piece
- Build confidence and feel fully prepared for the ceremony
Professional Headshot Session*
You will participate in a professional headshot photo session. You will receive professional photos that you can use for your LinkedIn profile, résumé, professional portfolio, networking, and other professional purposes. *Logistics permitting.
Performer Promotion
As the selected Commencement Vocalist, you may be featured in CUNY SPS Commencement communications. Your name, headshot, and recognition as the Commencement Vocalist may be used in School marketing and promotional materials, including:
- CUNY SPS social media channels
- Digital displays and boards throughout the School
- Commencement-related communications and promotional materials
The School may also announce your selection on its social media channels and digital displays to celebrate your achievement with the CUNY SPS community.
Your Commencement Day Experience
As the Commencement Vocalist, you will have a special role in the ceremony. You will:
- Get ready in the Stage Party Room, where you will have an opportunity to meet and mingle with faculty members and other members of the Commencement party before the ceremony.
- Participate in a rehearsal or sound check as directed by the Events team.
- Perform during the Commencement ceremony in front of your graduating class, faculty, staff, family members, and guests.
- Join your classmates, if participating in the Commencement ceremony, or guests, following your performance
- Additionally, your family and/or guests will have a designated seating section at Commencement, allowing them to celebrate and support you as you perform.
The Events team will provide additional instructions about arrival time, where to report, rehearsal or sound check details, what to bring, and what to expect before and during the ceremony.
Representing CUNY SPS
As the Commencement Vocalist, you will have the opportunity to share your talent with the CUNY SPS community and contribute to a memorable Commencement experience for your fellow graduates. The School will work with you throughout the process to help you feel confident, prepared, and ready to perform.
