The gap in mental healthcare access in historically marginalized communities partially drives mental health disparities in the US. Mental health task sharing, a model in which mental health professionals train community workers to perform simplified mental health support tasks, shows promise in closing this care gap. Community-based participatory research and implementation science principles are used to support ongoing quality improvement and the evolution of task-sharing programs to meet community needs. Adaptation of mental health task-sharing to meet community needs has included 1) creating a network of supportive organizaations, 2) using a community-partnered process to develop community implementation plans, and 3) implementiing ongoing cultural adaptations. This presentation will compare and provide lessons learned from two models of mental health task sharing in NYC which show promise in supportng greater mental health equity for low-income New Yorkers from underserved communities of color.
