Building anti-oppressive classrooms is an important goal throughout higher education, but carries particular urgency at CUNY. Our learners bring a wide range of experiences, which require intentional pedagogy in order to enhance learning and limit harm. In this presentation, we will use audio clips from students and faculty who participated in the Public Health Education Now (PHEN) Oral History project to provoke deep thinking about the importance of, challenges of, and avenues toward building anti-oppressive classrooms at CUNY. The PHEN project is a collaborative faculty-student project, which collected interviews with students, faculty, and staff about the experience of teaching and learning public health during the period 2020-2022, with a particular focus on COVID-19 and racial injustice. To engage fully with the clips, we will begin the session by honing our listening skills. Through this experiential listening session, we will reflect deeply on intentional teaching at CUNY, and possible ways forward.
