Description

This panel describes the experiences and learnings of faculty and students in an interdisciplinary CUNY-funded research project entitled “Lost in Translation: Improving Mental Health Care for Spanish-Speaking Communities.” This collaborative project aims to produce evidence-based guidelines of best practices for mental health interpreting and a curriculum proposal for the first interdisciplinary undergraduate program for Spanish mental health interpreters in the United States, to be offered at CUNY. In this presentation, four members of the research team will discuss (1) the context of mental health crisis, particularly in linguistically diverse communities, in which this study takes place, (2) a description of the study and its methods, including changes in data collection procedures required by the Covid-19 pandemic, (3) the collaborative and interdisciplinary principles that guided the study and how we put them in practice, and (4) main takeaways, lessons learned, and potential applications to other projects and disciplines.
