Description

In spring of 2019 the New York State Dream Act passed and provided eligible undocumented and immigrant students access to TAP, Excelsior, and Opportunity Programs across CUNY. However, the Covid pandemic detracted efforts to train and inform students and staff on these newly acquired resources. Moreover, during and post the pandemic proposals to increase noncitizen access to health care in New York were made and some implemented. But they included confusing pathways that deterred non-citizens student access. Further, recent and pending changes in the immigration system such as the potential demise of DACA, new parole categories and confusion about asylum has led to student anxieties and confusion about their access to health care, higher education and professional opportunities. This workshop will provide an explanation of resources for and eligibility of undocumented and non-citizen students’ access higher education and health care, including the impact of differences in immigration categories
