Description

This workshop presentation shares the conception and prototyping stages of a project at York College that offers CUNY- and SUNY-based transdisciplinary support for a community-run data justice initiative in environmental awareness with the Eastern Queens Alliance, Inc. (EQA), a federation of civic associations in pollution-burdened Southeast Queens. In response to EQA's interest in art-science initiatives, the project – developed between researchers at the Department of Performing and Fine Arts and the Department of Earth and Physical Sciences at CUNY York, and the Department of Media Study at SUNY Buffalo – transforms data into sound to develop new ways of thinking through air quality and aircraft noise data that EQA gathers, manages and interprets. Extrapolated values are sonified to explore correlations between measurements for a community-grounded art-science effort that seeks to grow data literacy and sensoriality to foster environmental equity through liberation science and ecological art.
