Name
DiversAbility: Ensuring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion does not forget Accessibility (CCSD)
Date & Time
Friday, April 28, 2023, 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM
Description

Colleges and Universities have long been drivers of social change. Across the globe, Higher Education institutions have begun acknowledging vital challenges and injustices like climate change and pay gaps. Although tremendous progress has been made toward equality across gender, race, and sexual orientation boundaries, one aspect of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion that is too often neglected: is disability. We will share the work the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities (CCSD) has done to ensure Accessibility is not forgotten and is a focus at CUNY. They'll discuss how they strategically implemented advocacy efforts that led to creating programs like CUNY LEADS, CUNY Unlimited, Inclusive Athletics, and, recently, the Universal Design, Learning, and Leadership Project. Additionally, they will cover marketing and recruiting strategies to recruit students with disabilities to CUNY. They will discuss how they successfully assessed and identified key challenges and opportunities across CUNY, listened to students, staff, and faculty over the past years, engaged with University Leadership, and received stakeholder feedback. The presentation outlines goals to resolve these critical needs in making sure Accessibility is part of DEI. These goals bring to life CUNY Core Values: Respect, Dignity, Equity, Inclusion, Trust, Integrity, Service, and Accessibility for all at CUNY.
