We are experiencing a revolution in film inclusion. Film is an impactful tool for changing hearts and minds and reaching a broad audience. Sadly, most film events are not accessible. Most films do not account for accessibility in their budget and do not look to include disability talent in their diversity effort.
Access in film presentations continues to evolve and took center stage at this year's Sundance Film Festival when a film judged by a deaf jury member was screened without captions, leading to a walk out of the judges. ReelAbilities Film Festival creates captions and Audio Description for all films and aims to raise the bar on accessibility in film presentations. To better understand the needs and the tools to allow film events to be fully accessible, we will discuss some of the learnings from ReelAbilities and how to make this industry fully accessible.
