The CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities (CCSD) will take a look at how colleges within the City University of New York have cultivated a strong and lasting neurodiverse community that supports students academically, socially, and professionally. As the landscape of higher education continues to evolve, there is a growing need to create inclusive environments where neurodivergent students not only succeed in their studies but also establish meaningful connections that extend beyond their time in college. By fostering community, institutions can help students build confidence, resilience, and networks that support them in navigating both academic life and future career opportunities. Drawing from experiences within the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities (CCSD), this presentation will highlight tangible strategies that have successfully strengthened neurodivergent communities across CUNY campuses.
The significance of these strategies through the creation and implantation of retreats, workshops, as well as other student-led and ally supported events provide neurodivergent students with a sense of belonging and continuity. In addition to sharing best practices from CCSD's numerous engagement activities like networking events and advocacy campaigns, the session will emphasize the importance of fostering environments where students feel supported in all aspects of their journey. We hope to share real-life accounts that will illustrate how these initiatives have led to long-term relationships, personal growth, and professional success for neurodivergent individuals.
