Speaker Bio
My name is Jacklyn Tomlin, and I'm a passionate disability rights advocate and educational consultant. My journey into this work began with my own experience as a parent of a dyslexic daughter. When she was diagnosed, I realized how little I knew about dyslexia and the special education system. That lack of knowledge left me feeling helpless, and I became determined to ensure other families didn't experience the same. This personal experience, coupled with the ongoing struggles of families I work with, has fueled my decision to pursue a PhD, allowing me to further contribute to research and systemic change. I went back to school, earning a Master's in Disability Studies and an Advanced Certificate in Disability Services in Higher Education, so I could better understand and advocate for my daughter, and for others. Now, I work directly with families, educating them about special education and empowering them to make informed decisions for their children. I've helped families secure private education and necessary services, all paid for by the NYC DOE. I'm deeply involved in my community, and I believe that education is a powerful tool for change. My personal mission is to bring healing to the world through storytelling and education. I conduct workshops to help families prepare for IEP meetings and learn various advocacy strategies. I've worked closely with Black mothers, providing resources and support during times of despair. I've also helped families navigate traumatic educational situations and secure evaluations to better understand their children's diagnoses. My identity as a Black woman has created a space of trust with parents who often feel marginalized. They feel comfortable sharing their fears and the complex challenges they face, knowing I understand their experiences. I'm committed to providing holistic support that addresses the multifaceted needs of these families, and my family's resilience continues to inspire me to create more educational spaces for others
